The South African National Nuclear Regulator (NNR) has approved a 20-year licence extension for Unit 2 of Eskom's Koeberg Nuclear Power Plant (Eskom press release, 06/11/2025). The 946 MW power unit will now be allowed to continue operations until 9 November 2045. The unit has gone through an “extensive refurbishment and life-extension programme,” including the replacement of three steam generators.
Unit 1 already had its license renewed in 2024 until July 2044, and together with Unit 2, Eskom aims to strengthen South Africa’s long-term energy security.
According to Enerdata’s Global Energy & CO2 Data, nuclear accounted for about 3% of South Africa’s total installed capacity (1.9 GW) and power mix in 2024.
