Shell withdraws from the 2.8 GW Atlantic Shores offshore wind project (US)

Shell New Energies, a subsidiary of Shell, has announced its decision to exit the 2.8 GW Atlantic Shores Offshore Wind project located offshore the US state of New Jersey (Shell press release, 29/10/2025).

  • The company has assigned its 50% share in the project to its project partner, EDF power solutions.
  • The decision was taken in line with Shell’s strategy to shift “away from capital-intensive generation projects to assets that support trading and retain strengths.”

In October 2025, the US Department of Justice announced its intention to review, and potentially revise, the approval of the Construction and Operations Plan (COP) for the project that was granted in October 2024.
